Gas Turbine Principles And Components

In this section of VLab material that can be found in usual textbooks of gas turbines and turbomachinery in general is available to the user. The included material contains description of gas turbines and their applications, principles of gas turbines components (inlets, compressors, combustion chambers, turbines, exhaust ducts, nozzles) and analysis of operation and performance. The information is organized and presented in the form of web pages ensuring this way the easy access.

A key feature of VLab is that the included text is supported with audiovisual material (animations, video). Particularly, videos for all gas turbines components, videos of operating gas turbines and videos explaining physical phenomena that are difficult to understand are included. This material transfer the actual physical reality into the classroom and enhances the student's ability to assimilate the principles taught.

Apart from videos and animations a number of simulations that support the text material are also included. A flow simulation and velocity triangles representation in a compressor cascade and a nozzle calculation program are two examples of the simulation software that is incorporated in VLab.

From this simulation the students can understand how a particle of air moves inside rotor and stator blades, the meaning of velocity triangles and the meaning of absolute and relative system of movement. They can also use the nozzle calculator to visual examine the various nozzle operating regimes, the meaning of critical pressure ratios in nozzle operation and calculate all the nozzle operating parameters for any desirable nozzle area and pressure ratio.
